The festival of Kataklismos (Pentecost) is an ancient tradition unique to Cyprus. It is celebrated in many cities and villages the week leading up to Pentecost.
One of the highlights of this festival is the famous and well-attended annual folk poetry competition.
This year Ayia Napa started a new local tradition by adding a “Blessing of the Waters” service to their Kataklysmos Festival. Just as in the annual Epiphany Blessing of the Waters service, the Kataklysmos Water Blessing included a dive for the Cross.
At the end of the Divine Liturgy for the Holy Spirit, which is celebrated on the Monday morning after Pentecost, the faithful, led by the clergy of the village, processed to the docks, boarded a ship, and blessed the waters.
The cross was thrown three times and both young men had a chance to retrieve the cross.
Blessed art Thou, O Christ our God,
Who has made manifest the fishermen as most wise,
By sending down upon them the Holy Spirit,
And by them hast drawn the world into thy net.
O Lover of Mankind, glory to Thee
